Recognizing the growth of the city of Spearfish, the South Dakota Department of Transportation knew it had to address the traffic congestion on Exit 14. The solution was a $28 million project that replaced the existing interchange with a new single-point design that could handle the traffic flow, accommodate larger vehicles, and even the exit to neighboring 27th Street. The new design also helped to provide better access for pedestrians – increasing the number of sidewalks and providing a connection to the bike path. New traffic lights also help to control access and traffic flow. The redesign of Exit 14 helped provide needed relief to travelers, and helped to address the traveling needs of a growing community – helping to provide a safer commute for years to come.
