PennDOT created a user-friendly, internet-based permitting process that saves time and money for the states highway users. The $1.1 million secure, user-friendly system provides the tools needed to create a Highway Occupancy Permit application, attach documents, submit the application package to PennDOT and view PennDOT’s response from any internet-enabled computer.
PennDOT each year issues approximately 15,000 Highway Occupancy Permits to homeowners, businesses, utility owners, developers, and municipalities. Until last October, permit applications were submitted by hand or mail to PennDOT offices. Customer response has been overwhelmingly positive. All participants in a December 2011 survey confirmed that the electronic permitting system is user friendly, and the turnaround time for permits is greatly improved.
