The South Carolina Department of Transportation identified an opportunity to improve connections to Clemson University while providing significant transportation upgrades in the process. This $13 million project included widening of the previous road from two to four lanes, while expanding bicycle and pedestrian access for safer travel through the corridor with a critical link over I-85 and a nearby trail extension. A new bridge also provides pedestrian and access for bicyclists over I-85. The innovative use of mechanically stabilized earth walls, along with working with the community to avoid the use right-of-ways and impacts to properties, allowed SCDOT to save money and time, while providing a vital connection for so many.
