Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation’s Wilhelm Ave and Cornwall Road Intersection Alignment

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and North Cornwall Township worked together on a project to improve safety for the accident-prone intersection of Cornwall Road, Wilhelm Avenue, and York Street near Lebanon High School. The $1.7 million project built a new signal-controlled intersection that provided safer and more controlled access for vehicles to both cross over and turn onto Cornwall Road. The new intersection also incorporated Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian curb ramps and linked existing sidewalks to the west with new sidewalks to an existing trail network on the school property; significantly improving pedestrian access to Lebanon High School athletic fields and school buildings. Additionally, designated bike lanes are provided on Cornwall Road to provide safer protected travel through the intersection. PennDOT collaborated with the school district to connect the new intersection’s stormwater system to one under construction for the school, reducing construction disturbance on Wilhelm Road during the project.
