In 2024, the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) – a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation – launched Mobile ID Check by Maryland; a free mobile application that allows businesses to verify customer age using mobile driver’s licenses or mDLs and identification cards directly from a smartphone, eliminating the need for additional hardware. Developed in-house by MVA’s Information Technology team, the app uses international standards, ensuring security and privacy. Businesses can download it from the Apple App Store and Google Play to quickly scan and authenticate mDLs, displaying only the necessary information, such as age eligibility and ID photos, without business incurring additional costs to conduct such checks. The app is currently being used at BWI Marshall Airport for alcohol purchases, with plans for wider adoption and at select liquor stores in Montgomery County.
