Maryland Department of Transportation’s US College Ave to Maryland 193 Multi-modal Project

In 2020, the Maryland State Highway Administration—a division of the Maryland Department of Transportation—launched the U.S. Route 1–College Avenue–Maryland 193 Multimodal Project, which widened the roadway and added turn lanes, raised medians, bike lanes, and ADA-compliant sidewalks. Other improvements included roadway resurfacing, landscaping, drainage system upgrades, storm water management facilities, new signage and pavement markings, pedestrian lighting, intersection lighting, and utility relocation work. The Maryland DOT noted that pedestrian and bicyclist safety was paramount along the corridor, especially in the vicinity of the University of Maryland College Park campus. This project – competed in November 2024 – enhanced for all roadway users, improved traffic flow, and supported current and future economic and residential development along the busy U.S. 1 corridor.
