The New Hampshire Department of Transportation discovered that the Rye Mortar Rubble Masonry or MRM Seawall suffered severe damage during January 2024 storms, putting critical infrastructure – including the roadway, sidewalks, and utilities – at risk. The compromised sections of the wall left the area vulnerable to further erosion and storm surge impacts. The agency’s $380,000project restored structural integrity to the seawall, preventing further deterioration and reducing hazards caused by displaced debris during high-surge events. Additionally, temporary sidewalk reconstruction improved pedestrian safety, and careful traffic management minimized disruptions for residents and travelers. The New Hampshire DOT noted that using pre-cast reinforced concrete barriers offered a faster, more resilient alternative to traditional cast-in-place concrete or stone masonry. This innovation accelerated construction, lowered costs, and improved long-term durability against storm surges. By preventing roadway failures and reducing maintenance costs, the project also supports the local economy by keeping businesses open and sustaining tourism—a key driver of the region’s economy.
