The Spaulding Turnpike’s traditional barrier toll plaza posed significant safety, congestion, and environmental challenges. Rear-end collisions and crashes involving toll booths were common, leading to injuries and fatalities. Additionally, stop-and-go traffic at the toll plazas contributed to increased vehicle emissions, increased travel times, and noise pollution for nearby communities. This $23.3 million New Hampshire Department of Transportation project spearheaded the conversion to all-electronic tolling or AET technology – the first project of its kind in the state – which eliminated tollbooth-related crashes and reducing travel times. The project also built over one mile of soundwalls in Rochester, NH, to further mitigate highway noise for neighboring communities. By improving traffic flow, air quality, and safety, has made the turnpike and surrounding communities safer and more livable.
