The New Jersey Department of Transportation initiated the North Wildwood Emergency Beach Nourishment Dredging Project to reduce the impact of storm surges that could flood businesses, buildings, and public roadways – damaging a shorefront economy where a year-round population of 3,500 swells to 77,000 in the summer months. NJDOT’s Office of Maritime Resources teamed up with H&L Contracting and Great Lakes Dredge and Dock to complete this emergency $16 million project which created a 100-to-200-foot beach “buffer” in just 22 days to enhance storm protections for the city of North Wildwood. The renourished beach provides an immediate buffer against coastal storms, reducing the risk of severe flooding and erosion. Its enhanced design helps dissipate wave energy more effectively, offering greater protection to nearby roads and structures. The increased shoreline width contributes to public safety by creating a stable and accessible environment for residents and visitors.
