Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Brodheadsville Roundabouts Enhance Traffic Flow and Improve Community Access

With crash rates on State Route 209 where it intersected with SR 115 near Brodheadsville, PA, more than five times the statewide average for similar roadway intersections, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation invested in a roundabout construction project to not only reduce crash rates but ease traffic congestion and improve safety for non-vehicle users as well. Roundabouts provided safer and more efficient intersection control, widening to add through lanes increased capacity, and provided more effective traffic flow as did the addition of center, left, and right turn lanes. The installation of a median on State Route 209 also mitigated a high historical preponderance of angle and rear end crashes as well. While it is too early to quantify the safety benefits, there has been only one reported crash since traffic control has been removed and that was attributed to drunk driving.  Pedestrian access throughout the community is significantly safer and better, particularly for school students, as the project also added sidewalks and delineated paths.
