The Florida Department of Transportation constructed new pedestrian and bicyclist facilities on S.R. 26 to eliminate the need for risk road crossings at unsafe locations. Additionally, drivers are operating at safer speeds because those safety-focused initiatives, such as raised crosswalks, also help to calm traffic and encourage drivers to slow down. Simply put, the $2.7 million project makes the area north of the University of Florida a safer community by improving pedestrian connectivity and enhancing safety for all roadway users. The additional crossings, which reduced the distance between existing crosswalks, help pedestrians make the decision to use a crosswalk instead of attempting to cross at less safe locations. The raised crosswalks place pedestrians and bicyclists at a higher elevation, making them more visible to drivers, and they also serve as traffic calming devices, which creates a safer roadway for all users. The project benefits economic development in the area by providing college students living nearby with safer, more convenient access to businesses and housing adjacent to campus.
