The Florida Department of Transportation, Central Florida Expressway Authority, and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise are working together to finish the region’s critical beltway road system while protecting the natural resources surrounding the Wekiva River; a 25-mile waterway that traverses three counties and thousands of acres of wildlife habitat. The final beltway stretch – Section 8 – makes a crucial connection between S.R. 429, I-4, and S.R. 417and turned the vision of a regional beltway into reality. The nearly three-mile Section 8 is relieving congestion on local roads, improving commutes, and easing travel to major airports, theme parks, and other destinations. The $275.35 million project also enhances safety for motorists and wildlife as the elevated expressway is separated from wildlife and traffic on local roads. Lighting under the over 20 replaced or widened bridges enhances safety. The project also added new and upgraded sidewalks and pedestrian signals at the interchange at International Parkway, which is lined with apartments, office buildings, and neighborhoods.
