Georgia Department of Transportation’s I-20 EB Exit Ramp Roundabout at Maynard Terrace

The intersection at the terminus of the I-20 Eastbound Exit Ramp to Maynard Terrace experienced major delays and caused backups on the ramp – with traffic spillback to I-20 contributing to increased rear-end collisions, often severe in nature due to higher vehicle speeds on the interstate. To address those issues, the Georgia Department of Transportation installed a roundabout, significantly improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and cutting crash rates—including severe crashes—by 71 percent. The design also enhanced overall safety and efficiency for drivers. The $7.4 million project also introduced brand-new pedestrian infrastructure to the intersection, including sidewalks and crosswalks – enhancing safety for residents and students at nearby Alonzo Crim Open Campus High School. The agency said funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act supported the construction phase, allowing timely completion of critical safety improvements – ensuring that infrastructure upgrades, including the roundabout and pedestrian facilities, were implemented.
