Mississippi Department of Transportation’s U.S. 72 Roundabout Benton County

Between January 1, 2006, and June 15, 2021, some 157 crashes occurred at the intersection of U.S. 72 and State Route 7 in Benton County, MS – including nine fatal crashes and an additional 73 injury crashes. In 2014, the Mississippi Department of Transportation attempted to improve safety at this intersection with lower-cost countermeasures – such as adding flashing stop signs and splitter islands – to no avail. To solve this major safety concern, the agency worked with national experts to install a roundabout to help correct crash concerns at this pivotal intersection in northern Mississippi. By reducing serious and fatal crashes, drivers can safely navigate the intersection with less risk to life and property. In addition, the $7.8 million roundabout reduces the delay in travel times caused by wrecks. By constructing this roundabout, the Mississippi DOT has significantly improved motorist safety and access along the U.S. 72 corridor. Over the next 20 years, the state is expected to realize more than $35 million in societal and economic benefits, along with increased operational efficiency due to a reduction in serious and fatal crashes at the intersection.
