South Carolina Department of Transportation’s US 29 at Welcome Road Roundabout

This project improved safety at the intersection of US-29 and Welcome Road in Anderson County. Due to the high average daily traffic (ADT), this area was prone to high-speed side and rear end crashes. To solve this problem, the South Carolina Department of Transportation built a single lane roundabout with light poles to remain illuminated at night and staged speed limit reductions as motorists approach the intersection. The high-speed nature of US-29, plus having a high ADT number, made the intersection at Welcome Road and US-29 a very dangerous area that resulted in a large amount of high-speed vehicular crashes. This project drastically reduced the number of fatal and serious injury crashes. In addition to the safety aspects of a roundabout, an added benefit is that this type of intersection can continue to operate during times that the power grid in the area is down as it does not rely on power. The light poles will not function, but the reflective pavement markings and signage can still allow motorists to safely navigate through the roundabout – an extremely beneficial factor considering the aftereffects of Hurricane Helene. Costing $2.8 million, the roundabout accommodates both freight and passenger vehicles, supporting the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout the community and the broader region.
