Tennessee Department of Transportation’s I-65 June Lake Boulevard Interchange

To address the rapid growth of Spring Hill, TN, and the resulting traffic congestion where the formerly named Buckner Road connects with I-65, the Tennessee Department of Transportation collaborated with the city to develop plans for a Diverging Diamond Interchange or DDI to optimize traffic flow. A traffic impact study for a new 775-acre mixed-use development further confirmed the urgent need to create more direct and safer access to I-65. The agency also selected the design-build method to fast-track this vital project, enabling quicker construction to meet the city’s immediate congestion relief needs and support future economic development. Thus, what would have taken six to eight years to build using traditional construction methods ended up completed in half the time. The top benefits of the project are improved access to I-65, the eventual addition of a multimodal path for bicyclists and pedestrians, reduced traffic congestion, and expanded economic development opportunities. The $42 million project will also ultimately support the nearby June Lake mixed-use development, which includes 2,900 residences, 400 hotel rooms, 1.3 million square feet of retail/restaurant space, and 3.9 million square feet of commercial office space. Consequently, Buckner Road has been renamed June Lake Boulevard.
