Michigan Department of Transportation’s M-89 Roundabout

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s M-89 Roundabout serves as the western gateway to the city of Allegan, enhancing access to the growing and revitalizing downtown business district. This $6.2 million project improved a critical state trunkline intersection in southwest Michigan, supporting both local businesses and agricultural commerce. MDOT’s roundabout design eliminated the center left-turn lane on M-89, making room for a new sidewalk linking Hubbard Street to 2nd Street. The project also boosted pedestrian safety by shortening crossings and limiting foot traffic to one-way vehicle flows across the intersection. The intersection prioritizes safety and efficiency for all users—commercial, agricultural, commuter, recreational, and vulnerable road users alike.

Initially, limited resources constrained the project to resurfacing existing infrastructure with no major intersection changes. Michigan DOT and the city explored a roundabout design, which better addressed these concerns but exceeded available funding at the time. The passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act made additional funding available, enabling Michigan DOT to move forward with the roundabout and bring the community’s vision to life.
