Michigan Department of Transportation’s US-41/M-28 and Lakeshore Drive Roundabout

Spearheaded by the Michigan Department of Transportation, the US-41/M-28 at Lakeshore Drive roundabout has significantly improved safety and mobility for both local and regional traffic, while enhancing multimodal access in Ishpeming, MI. The previous signalized intersection had a history of fatal and serious crashes—at one point ranking as the most severe crash location in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and among the worst in the state. Many incidents were caused by red-light violations and left-turn conflicts. Costing $6.4 million, the new roundabout reduces vehicle speeds and eliminates right-angle conflict points, greatly lowering the risk of severe crashes. Located on a key route to the community hospital, downtown, and nearby neighborhoods, the roundabout enhances safety for all users, including patients, hospital staff, business visitors, and residents. Pedestrian safety has also improved, with slower traffic and refuge islands that allow for crossing one direction of traffic at a time. Supported by Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), this project advances the goals of Vision Zero and the Safe System approach by prioritizing safety for all road users.
