In 2024, the Ohio Department of Transportation undertook a $21 million major rehabilitation of Norwood Lateral (also known as SR 562), a key east-west connector between I-71 and I-75 in Hamilton County, Ohio. The project included resurfacing between I-71 and the Paddock Road interchange and rehabilitating three mainline bridges over busy local roads. Due to complex bridge geometry, underlying roadways and rail lines, and high traffic volumes, the project team faced significant logistical and engineering challenges. To address these, they implemented a two-phase plan with full directional closures—each lasting 90 days—rather than prolonged single-lane closures. This approach improved safety, accelerated the timeline, and reduced costs.
While causing short-term inconvenience, the closures enabled more efficient construction, better quality control, and long-term benefits for the traveling public. Damaged pavement found during milling was quickly repaired to ensure a smooth, long-lasting surface. The improvements, including a new road surface and updated markings, have greatly benefited commuters. The result is a more rideable, aesthetically improved, and structurally sound corridor—preserving a vital artery and saving millions in future maintenance.
