Arkansas Department of Transportation’s Work Zone Speed Enforcement Cameras

Work zone safety and distracted driving remain significant concerns in Saline County, AR. To address those issues, the Arkansas Department of Transportation launched the “Slow Down, Phone Down” campaign aimed at encouraging safer driving behaviors. The introduction of speed enforcement cameras in work zones was essential in reducing preventable accidents, serious injuries, and fatalities. Before these cameras were legalized, law enforcement officials had to physically station themselves within work zones to monitor traffic violations. Often, this required two officers: one to observe and another stationed at the end of the zone to apprehend offenders. The implementation of these cameras eliminates the need for officers within work zones, allowing for a more efficient use of resources while enhancing safety for both workers and drivers. Now, officers can safely follow violators to a secure location for a traffic stop. This $1 million project has significantly benefited the local community by reducing traffic congestion and minimizing the need for detours on daily commutes to work, school, or home.
