California Department of Transportation’s Stratford Kings River Bridge Replacement

The Stratford Kings River Bridge Replacement project undertaken by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) addressed aging infrastructure and safety deficiencies along State Route 41—a vital corridor connecting California’s Central Valley to coastal regions. To minimize traffic disruptions, Caltrans coordinated with regional partners to establish a 32-mile detour route that maintained mobility for freight, emergency services, and the public. Proactive outreach efforts, including town halls and press releases, kept the community informed. The $18.7 million project employed accelerated bridge construction techniques and innovative materials, completing the work within 150-day full closure. This approach minimized long-term disruptions, restored critical connectivity, and supported regional economic activity. The project stands out as a model of innovation, collaboration, and expedited project delivery, Caltrans said.
