Delaware Department of Transportation’s SR 299, SR 1 to Catherine Street Widening Project

This Delaware Department of Transportation project widened a two-mile stretch of Catherine Street (also known as State Route 299 and Main Street), enhancing traffic capacity, safety, and operations. It also added transit, pedestrian, and bicycle facilities to better serve residents of Middletown and southern New Castle County. This east-west high-capacity roadway connects US 301 with Delaware State Route 1/US 13. Future traffic models showed an overwhelmed corridor using the pre-existing lane design and structure. By widening the corridor, adding bus access, constructing a shared-use path, and completing the sidewalk network, the project not only supports growing traffic volumes but also enhances multimodal connections to essential services and key destinations—helping to drive economic and residential growth for years to come. In the design process for nearly a decade, this roadway widening project was finally completed due to federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act or IIJA.
