Connecticut Department of Transportation’s I-84 Safety and Operational Improvements in West Hartford

The Interstate 84 Safety and Operational Improvements project in West Hartford, led by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, addresses congestion and traffic operations on that highway in the Town of West Hartford. The traffic volume within the project limits is at or near capacity, and closely spaced interchanges exacerbate congestion and weaving issues. A review of three-year crash data (2012-2014) revealed 159 crashes with 48 injuries and one fatality on I-84 WB, with 202 crashes with 90 injuries and one fatality on I-84 EB. The primary types of crashes – rear-end, sideswipe (same direction), and fixed-object – indicate problems with congestion and weaving. This $54.6 million project has alleviated congestion bottlenecks, improved travel time reliability to and from numerous commercial/retail developments, and improved access for the densely populated neighborhoods of West Hartford. Enhanced travel time reliability and mobility through this section of I-84 also benefit the economy of adjacent municipalities.
