In 2022, wrong-way driving fatalities on Connecticut freeways surged by 500 percent, making it the deadliest year on record for such crashes. The Connecticut Department of Transportation and the state legislature noted that wrong-way crashes and fatalities in 2022 exceeded the previous three years combined, with impaired drivers being a major factor. To address this, Connecticut is implementing a Safe Systems Approach, focusing on high-risk areas identified through data analysis. The $40 million wrong-way countermeasures program includes engineering improvements, education and awareness, plus enhanced post-crash care. Key measures include installing activated Wrong Way Detection and Notification Systems at 225 priority locations, adding arrows at exit ramps, and launching public service announcements. These efforts aim to significantly reduce fatal wrong-way crashes statewide.
