As part of Delaware Department of Transportation’s (DelDOT) system preservation program, the I-95 corridor in Wilmington was identified for repairs as well as an opportunity to beautify the community for residents and guests alike. The selected repairs for 19 bridges and 3 miles of roadway aimed to ensure a minimum of 30 years of durability while the community enhancement projects created more opportunities for recreation. To boost the community for motorists and non-motorists, DelDOT developed refurbished basketball courts, new pickleball and tennis courts, a dog park, improved pedestrian lighting, new bridge overpass lighting, ornamental fencing, and beautification of street corners. Despite heavy daily traffic of over 100,000 vehicles on I-95, the construction work was carried out with minimal disruption. The $200 million project resulted in improved safety along I-95, including modern traffic barriers along shoulders and the median, upgraded directional signage, improved signal timing, city street repaving, and reconfiguration of the I-95 southbound entrance ramp. The project’s completion bolstered safety on I-95, minimized future maintenance work that would cause lane closures and delays, and heightened the daily lives of residents through public enhancements. From community enrichment to revitalized roads, the project contributes to the regional economy by leaving I-95 and city streets in good repair, ensuring a reliable roadway network for at least 30 years.
