The Florida Department of Transportation’s $800,000 Southeast Toll Interoperability Hub project advanced a long-standing goal of national toll interoperability. Connecting Florida’s Southeast Hub to another regional hub now allows compatibility with toll systems across 22 other states. Florida’s Southeast Hub, the largest interagency toll processing center, serves as a regional hub for toll agencies in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina, while the Central Hub serves agencies in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. This hub-to-hub connection improves processing efficiency and offers a seamless experience for customers traveling on toll roads across multiple states. The project significantly benefits the community by providing drivers with a safer, more convenient toll payment experience across participating states. It reduces the hassle of managing payments across different tolling agencies, ultimately improving travel experiences and supporting economic activity in the region. For user-financed toll facilities, electronic toll collection ensures a safe, reliable, and efficient customer experience. By leveraging existing tolling infrastructure and establishing interoperability, the project enhances safety by minimizing cash transactions, improves reliability through streamlined payments, and potentially reduces congestion by enabling smoother traffic flow at toll points.
