Florida Department of Transportation’s Skyway Wave Attenuation Device (WAD) Project

The Florida Department of Transportation implemented Wave Attenuation Devices or WADs to combat erosion along the frontage road near the Skyway Bridge; an area prone to erosion during heavy rains, tropical storms, and hurricanes. FDOT chose a breakwater solution that not only addressed the erosion issue but also offered environmental benefits. The $6.48 million project has been a success, benefiting both the environment and the community. The WADs held strong against Hurricane Idalia’s storm surge and have since become a popular fishing spot for residents. Additionally, the project enhanced the resilience of the I-275 connector between Manatee and Pinellas counties. The WADs also provide a valuable fish habitat and promote seagrass growth, which are crucial to Florida’s sport fishing and ecotourism industries.
