Idaho Transportation Department: Safety, Innovation, and Economic Gains Spur Goosehaven Revival

Safety for motorists had become an issue on the Goosehaven roadway near St. Maries, Idaho. To address safety concerns while also improving the highway infrastructure for timber being shipped by truck, the Idaho Transportation Department initiated a $12.5 million project to widen the roadway while also creating specific travel lanes and adding extra shoulder space for freight traffic. The project also installed new guardrails to form protective barriers to improve roadway safety as a particular three-mile section of that highway had gained notoriety for its frequent accidents due to its narrow and winding nature. Those safety measures addressed long-standing requests from local residents yet also improved throughput for the timber industry, which is key to the area’s rural economy.
