In 2022, the Idaho Transportation Department upgraded and relocated the Port of Entry facility that serves commercial truck traffic east of Declo on Interstate 84. This $14.5 million project also addressed the safety concerns arising from passenger traffic and pedestrians sharing the restricted area with heavy commercial trucking. The new Port of Entry location will facilitate more efficient trucking operations through advanced technology that comply with current federal standards. In addition to reducing traffic congestion, the new facility incorporates Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) and Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) technologies. Those technologies allow truckers to weigh their loads while their trucks remain in motion, meaning vehicles need only need stop for safety inspections. That minimizes stoppage time for trucks so they can quickly resume freeway travel and get freight to its destination.
