In response to ongoing safety concerns on a narrow, winding part of State Highway 55 with limited clear zones, the Idaho Department of Transportation initiated a $58.7 million project to improve the road’s conditions. The upgrades involved widening and straightening the road using Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls and removing nine rock formations; using controlled blasts to clear 66,432 feet of material. Additionally, work crews installed 20,262 square feet of MSE Retaining Wall, created three scenic observation points with decorative rocks, and added 3,619 feet of guardrails along the river. These changes made this section of SH-55 safer with wider shoulders and more guardrails. To prevent rock falls, crews installed Tecco Mesh and snow fences; marking the largest use of Pinned Tecco Mesh in the U.S. The use of this material was a first of its kind in Idaho. Those innovations played a crucial role in achieving a higher level of safety along this road.
