Idaho Transportation Department’s Robotics On Clearwater Bridge

The historic US-12 Clearwater Memorial Bridge in Lewiston, ID, underwent rehabilitation by the Idaho Department of Transportation beginning in 2023 to enhance safety, functionality, and economic opportunity in the Clearwater region. Originally built in 1951, the bridge required upgrades as several components were nearing the end of their service life. The project featured innovative technology, including the use of robotic arms to tie deck materials – a task traditionally done by hand. This advancement significantly improved worker safety and accelerated construction, allowing traffic to resume more quickly. The $40 million project eliminated load-carrying restrictions and enhanced mobility with wider travel lanes, shoulders, a median, and sidewalks. Most importantly, the improvements are expected to extend the life of the bridge for future generations.
