Illinois Department of Transportation’s Jane Byrne Interchange

The Jane Byrne Interchange project vastly improved safety and mobility for the entire Chicago community. The more than $800 million project revitalized the decades-old interchange, often ranked as one of the slowest, most congested highway freight bottlenecks in the nation – reimagining it as a multi-modal corridor for businesses, residences, and other attractions. The project involved rebuilding four bridges over the interchange to accommodate wider sidewalks and bike lanes. Additionally, the project transformed a popular street into an expansive walkway and rehabilitated the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line station – adding an elevator for customers with disabilities.
