Illinois Department of Transportation’s Redoing the Pinckneyville Square

The Pinckneyville Square, located at the intersection of Illinois 13, 127, and 154, features traffic flowing counterclockwise around the Perry County Courthouse in this historic southern Illinois community. This $4.1 million Illinois Department of Transportation project realigned Illinois 13 and 127 to enable two-way traffic and modernized the Illinois 154 intersection with updated signals. The project also effectively created a “bypass effect” by shifting Illinois 13/127 slightly eastward, eliminating the perpendicular stop in front of the Square. This redesign has reduced conflict points, improved sight lines, and provided ample space for trucks and vulnerable road users. Enhanced pedestrian signals, bike accommodations, and American with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks further contribute to safety and accessibility. Before the construction, the Square averaged a crash every two months, with an injury crash occurring every eight months. Since completing the project, there have been no reported crashes.
