Constructed in 1993, the Bob Michel Bridge was due for rehabilitation. As the only pedestrian-accessible crossing over the Illinois River in the area, a redesign proved necessary to address growing safety and mobility needs. Previously, the structure carried 17,500 vehicles daily, with narrow sidewalks posing risks for pedestrians and bicyclists. Connecting Peoria’s Warehouse and East Peoria’s Levee districts, this $24.6 million Illinois Department of Transportation project added a 14-foot-wide protected shared-use path, while also improving overall safety and access to the structure. The upgraded bridge supports regional revitalization, meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and links together multiple trails, enhancing both transportation and recreation opportunities. The project also introduced new light emitting diode or LED lighting and traffic signals. Overall, the project helped improve the integration of the bridge with Peoria’s riverfront plans for expanded green spaces and attractions.
