Kansas Department of Transportation’s Kansas Safety Corridor Pilot

The “Drive to Zero” coalition aims to eliminate fatal and serious injuries on Kansas highways through a safety corridor program. Four high-crash corridors were selected based on data and observed risky driving behaviors. The program features yellow “Safety Corridor – Increased Enforcement” signs to alert drivers. It includes high-visibility education campaigns, increased enforcement, low-cost safety measures, and Traffic Incident Management training for first responders. Local high schools participating in the “Seatbelts Are For Everyone” program also join in promoting safe driving. Spearheaded by Kansas Department of Transportation, this $2.7 million initiative raises safety awareness through media campaigns and provides crash dashboards for local law enforcement and public works. Ongoing focus group meetings with stakeholders help refine and improve safety measures for each corridor.
