Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s I-75 NKY Projects

The I-75 NKY Projects initiative significantly enhanced safety and improved connectivity for motorists, pedestrians, and freight in the rapidly growing Boone County area. Two railroad crossings near KY 338 and US 25 previously obstructed access to an industrial complex, raising safety concerns. This also hindered the Walton Fire Department from accessing nearby Richwood Road and Dixie Highway when trains blocked those routes, delaying emergency response times. Additionally, the intersection of Richwood Road at I-71/75 consistently faced traffic queues that extended onto the highway, creating further safety risks. This $137.7 million Kentucky Transportation Cabinet project introduced critical upgrades, including new multi-use paths and sidewalks for pedestrian and bicycle connections. These improvements dramatically increased travel safety, reduced travel delays, and enhanced access for businesses in the area. The project also improved access to three truck stops along a key segment of the National Highway Freight Network. The shared-use paths will integrate with a planned regional multi-use trail, expanding accessibility for both bicyclists and pedestrians. The elimination of two railroad crossings and the construction of an overhead bridge have significantly reduced congestion and improved safety. This also ensures uninterrupted access to the industrial park and fire station, addressing critical safety and operational needs.
