Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Smithland Bridge

Opened in 1931, the U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge in Smithland served as an essential connection for the local farming community. Yet its narrow lanes struggled to accommodate modern traffic, with farmers operating heavy machinery often delayed as they waited for traffic to safely clear before crossing. As the only connection between northern and southern Livingston County, the bridge is vital for commuters, commerce, school buses, and emergency responders. Now, with 12-foot driving lanes and 8-foot shoulders, the once tense crossing is a smooth and scenic drive. Led by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, this $63.3 million dollar project saves farmers time by eliminating the need to wait for traffic breaks.
