Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s LA 616 (Arkansas Road) Widening & Roundabouts

LA 616 (Arkansas Road) was a two-lane state highway running through West Monroe, serving as a critical east-west corridor connecting numerous types of development in the city. Due to the growth of West Monroe, the level of service for Arkansas Road had dwindled, with traffic volume outweighing the capacity of the roadway and impacting the safety of both motorists and pedestrians. There were no turn lanes or sidewalks along the corridor, and multiple busy intersections were controlled by traffic signals, creating queuing and congestion throughout the day. The $33 million project widened a busy 3-mile stretch of the highway from two lanes to five, including a continuous center turn lane. The design also replaced four signalized intersections with two-lane roundabouts and improved sidewalks. As a result, business owners and residents along Arkansas Road are experiencing greater safety and mobility, with easier access points and maneuverability for motorists and other road users.
