Maine Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety and Mobility Improvement Project

Augusta’s outdated traffic signals required significant upgrades to improve efficiency and meet current standards, including those set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. To enhance mobility while reducing future maintenance needs, Maine Department of Transportation invested $10 million in this project, utilizing Advanced Transportation Controller and Connected Vehicle technology. The project focused on upgrading equipment and technology at each intersection, leveraging existing infrastructure. The implementation of Modern Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures resulted in a nearly 20 percent reduction in vehicle delays in Augusta. These improved traffic flows have positive effects, such as enhancing air quality, reducing commute times, and ensuring timely emergency vehicle response. As part of the project, pedestrian wait times have been reduced by approximately 15 percent, and the on-street facilities for pedestrians are improved for all users. The signal system now has the capability to prioritize control for snowplows during poor weather conditions, and some freight vehicles can request priority service as well. This investment in signal upgrades benefits the city and supports economic success in the Greater Augusta region.
