In the ever-changing world of technology, Maryland Department of Transportation wanted to ensure it took advantage of all available tools to keep customers’ data secure and be as accessible as possible when it came to identification cards and drivers licenses. This $500,000 project aimed to build upon the success of the security encompassed in Maryland’s physical ID card by creating a secure, digital product that customers would trust with their personal information. The encryption of identity data protects against tampering and theft, and biometric authentication using Face ID or Touch ID ensures that only the person who added the ID to the device can view or present it. In the event that an iPhone or Apple Watch is lost or stolen, customers can use the “Find My” app to lock or erase their device. The project also ensures that the Maryland Mobile ID is accessible to all customers regardless of their technological abilities or device preferences. It provides easy-to-follow directions and customer service support to help customers navigate the new technology. One year after the rollout, about 150,000 Maryland customers had added the Maryland Mobile ID to their Apple Wallet, with more each day.
