Michigan Department of Transportation’s Ancillary Structures Asset Management Program

Michigan DOT’s Ancillary Structures Program encompasses 16 vital asset types crucial for safe road operations. This $10 million project will allow Michigan DOT to employ ongoing field inventory, inspections, and database management. Through an online ArcGIS dashboard, Michigan DOT staff now access real-time data on asset conditions, inspection progress, Requests for Action (RFA), and planned inspections. The program inventories existing assets and assigns condition ratings, starting with assets that, if failure occurs, would have the greatest impact to safety, mobility and commerce due to unplanned roadway closures. To date, the RFA response timeline from identification to completion of corrective action has been reduced nearly 10 times. This proactive approach enables Michigan DOT to swiftly address safety issues, deploying maintenance teams within days rather than months to enhance local infrastructure across the state.
