Route 54, a vital access route to the Lake of the Ozarks region, is experiencing a boost popularity – a road that features a mix of interchanges and at-grade intersections. However, numerous severe and fatal crashes at these intersections have driven crash rates above the statewide average. This $ 6.14 million project made way for intersection improvements. Overall, the addition of J-turns has made the corridor safer without negatively impacting the capacity and operation of the corridor. Reducing serious crashes while providing safer access to the highway is expected to increase the route’s operational efficiency. Since speed differentials and the number of crossing vehicles were reduced, the corridor is expected to operate more consistently while continuing to provide broader access to the Lake of the Ozarks area. Safer intersections will additionally foster more opportunities for development along the corridor, as users will feel more at ease accessing connecting roadways.
