Montana Department of Transportation: Digital Delivery Computer Aided Design Implementation

“Digital delivery” is helping Montana speed up transportation infrastructure project delivery for residents statewide. The $1.3 million digital delivery computer aided design (CAD) implementation project serves as a necessary innovation to improve and streamline workflows and processes related to Montana’s transportation assets. Prior to this project, design models were developed in 2D – posing challenges for Montana Department of Transportation partners, stakeholders and the public to visualize the design’s potential impact in a real-life setting. With the transition to 3D models, Montana DOT is realizing a future of better partnerships, collaboration and asset management. For instance, the new design software and 3D methods helped to replace a bridge in the rural community of Denton, Montana. In late 2021, the Westwind Fire destroyed a highway bridge overnight, severely limiting town access. Using these new 3D tools, MDT and project partners delivered a newly designed and constructed bridge, returning full access to the community within months.
