Increased travel demand on the transportation network around Lincoln created traffic bottlenecks along Nebraska Highway 2; congestion that also resulted from heavier truck traffic through the area. As a result, the Nebraska Department of Transportation knew was time to build a brand new beltway. The new $461 million Lincoln South Beltway enhances east-west connectivity for regional and interstate travel through Nebraska via its four-lane design – improving traffic flow, mobility, safety, and economic opportunities for state residents. By diverting freight trucks from the local urban transportation network, this infrastructure project will reduce commercial traffic inside the city and thus improve mobility and travel safety for community residents.
