In Nebraska, more than 5,600 vehicles pass through the US-6/N-66 intersection near Ashland daily to connect with Interstate 80. Located between Nebraska’s two largest cities, Ashland’s population of over 3,000 residents – many commuting to Omaha and Lincoln – relies on US-6 and N-66. With a crash rate 3.5 times higher than the state average, something had to be done to keep those commuters safe when traveling in this area. The Nebraska Department of Transportation introduced a modular roundabout pilot project, costing $1.5 million, which proved to be significantly cheaper than traditional concrete roundabouts. Completed in summer 2023, the roundabout accommodates various traffic types and withstands impacts, resulting in zero crashes as of March 2024. As traffic volumes are expected to rise with adjacent highway projects, the roundabout ensures safer access for motorists, crucial for daily commuters.
