New York State Department of Transportation’s Maspeth Park Creation

The New York State Department of Transportation created Maspeth Park to mitigate the impacts of the Kosciuszko Bridge construction on the Queens-side community. This park is the last major green space, among several others, constructed by the agency to offset the effects of the bridge and local street re-alignments. This $18 million project also provides a new recreational facility to an ethnically and economically diverse area of Queens that previously lacked significant green spaces. The park serves the business community and residential neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Blissville, offering seating, tables, game tables, and restrooms. Residents within 15 minutes walking distance of this new recreation area can enjoy basketball, fitness, skateboarding, passive recreation, and local parks programming. Rehabilitated sidewalks also improve pedestrian access to the park and other green spaces in this ultra-urban environment.
