New York State Department of Transportation’s Mini-Forest

The $150,000 Mini-Forest project in Nassau County pilot tested small scale reforestation initiatives on right-of-way property. Led by the New York State Department of Transportation, the Mini-Forest helps meet the goals of the New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019, which requires the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Key goals of the Mini-Forest were to mitigate “heat island” effects, improve air quality, reduce fuel consumption by maintenance operations due to reduced mowing, reduce safety risks to workers by reducing mowing area, reduce long-term overall maintenance costs, and reduce erosion.
