New York State Department of Transportation’s US 62 Road Diet Project

This $6.7 million project transformed a 2.4-mile stretch of US Route 62 in Niagara Falls, NY. This New York State Department of Transportation initiative reduced travel lanes from two to one in each direction and added a dedicated bike lane. Curb bump outs were installed as traffic calming measures, enhancing pedestrian safety by shortening crossing distances and deterring cut-through traffic. The City of Niagara Falls receives over 800 million visitors annually. Businesses in the project area, including Main Street (west end), Pine Avenue (up to one block north and Walnut Avenue), and 19th Street, will benefit from the improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Additionally, the Superintendent of Police reported a 50% reduction in accidents and fewer speeding complaints.
