North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Harkers Island Bridge Replacement

The Harkers Island replacement bridge replacement represents the first time the North Carolina Department of Transportation built a concrete bridge fully reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer or FRP bars and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Strands. This single 3,200-foot bridge replaces two 50-year-old deteriorated bridges. The new $60 million bridge is designed to withstand the coastal environment and provide greater durability. Now, emergency responders, residents, and visitors can access the island without delays, while also expanding the hurricane evacuation capacity of the roadway served by the bridge.
