The S-Line corridor, part of the Southeast High Performance Rail corridor, spans 90 miles from the North Carolina-Virginia state line to just south of the Triangle region. The North Carolina Department of Transportation collaborated with urban and rural communities along the corridor to create a transit-oriented development or TOD strategy; aiming to boost economic growth, quality of life, mobility, and access. This $900,000 S-Line TOD Planning Study seeks to prepare communities for passenger rail opportunities – evaluating market conditions, potential for affordable housing, transportation options, and local plans. The study also identified ways to integrate transportation systems through mobility hubs, land use planning, urban design, place-making, and real estate development. Each community received a “playbook” with recommendations for transportation-focused development, timelines, goals, and projects to advance multimodal transportation initiatives.
